Grace Builds a New Community
Reading: Acts 9:26-31 -- Saul attempts to join the believers in Jerusalem, who fear him. Barnabas advocates for him, stands with him, and describes his transformation. The church receives Saul, and the passage closes with the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria growing in peace and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.
Devotional: Grace did not just change Saul individually. It taught the church how to receive him. Barnabas became the bridge -- the advocate who stood in the gap between a transformed man and a community that was not yet ready to trust him. Without Barnabas, Saul's story may have stalled entirely. This is a picture of what the body of Christ is meant to be: a community where grace is not just believed but practiced, where people are not only welcomed in theory but received in reality. Jesus saves us personally, but he disciples us communally.
The church is not a service to consume. It is a family through which grace flows, restores, advocates, and advances. Someone around you may be waiting for a Barnabas. That person may be you.
Personal Reflection: Is there someone in your community who needs an advocate -- someone to stand with them, vouch for them, or welcome them in?
Practical Application: Reach out this week to someone who may feel like an outsider in your church, your neighborhood, or your circle. Offer a simple, genuine act of welcome. Be their Barnabas.
